indianola sustainability committee

In 2008, the Indianola Sustainability Committee was formed by volunteer members representing the City of Indianola, Indianola Municipal Utilities, Simpson College, citizens, an architectural firm, local businesses and the Indianola School District. The purpose of this committee is to educate our citizens on the responsible use of limited resources and encourage behavior that provides for a comparable standard of living for future generations.

Since the formation of the Indianola Sustainability Committee, the group’s mission has been to promote behavior that allows the community to meet present needs without wasting resources and compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.  Over the past few years there has been success in moving towards that goal by raising awareness during Sustainability Month, by restructuring utility energy efficiency programs to include the most effective measures to reduce electric consumption and by modifying the city’s tax abatement schedule to include incentives for incorporating sustainable building practices.
