On January 1,
2009 Indianola Municipal Utilities launched a new program whereby
electric customers may designate that part, or all, of their monthly
electric usage is generated from a renewable resource. The Renewable
Energy Credit Program was created to allow businesses and individuals
to support the development and use of alternative energy in areas,
such as Indianola, that are not able to offer it directly.
A Renewable
Energy Credit (REC) represents one kilowatt-hour (kwh) of renewable
electricity generated and delivered to the power grid. An REC also
represents the environmental benefits of replacing traditional,
fossil-fuel power with clean, renewable power. For every kwh of
renewable energy produced, there is one less kwh of power that is
produced using conventional fuels. The more REC’s sold, the more
renewable energy is produced.
Through IMU’s
Renewable Energy Credit Program, customers may purchase part or all of
their monthly electric consumption from these renewable energy
sources. The additional cost to customers for renewable energy is 1˘
per kwh. For example, a customer who averages 1,000 kwh’s/month and
wants approximately 10% of their energy to come from renewable
resources, would pay $1.00 per month in addition to their normal
bill. Customers can designate their level of participation, in 100
kwh blocks, with each block costing an additional $1.00 per month.
Customers may also designate that 100% of their monthly consumption
come from renewable energy sources, paying 1˘ more for each kwh
consumed, rounded to the nearest dollar, in addition to their normal
bill.
Customers
must elect to participate in the program by completing an
authorization form. In addition, customers must notify the utility
billing office if they wish to discontinue participation in the
program. Forms are available at the billing office in city hall,
located at 110 North 1st Street, or at the IMU administrative office
located at 111 South Buxton Street. Questions regarding the renewable energy
credit program should be directed to Chris Longer, IMU Program
Coordinator at 961-9444.
