indianola sustainability study

In March of 2010, Indianola Municipal Utilities, on behalf of The Indianola Sustainability Committee, was successful in obtaining a $50,000 Iowa Power Fund grant from the Iowa Office of Energy Independence.  The grant money was used to conduct a comprehensive analysis of Indianola’s energy use (electric, natural gas, and transportation) and to develop strategies aimed at reducing the community’s overall energy consumption over the next five years.

The results of the community energy analysis were used to create a baseline against which future energy reduction programs will be measured.  The analysis includes all fuel sources used in heating and cooling processes and transportation modes using IMU electric data, Mid American natural gas data, data collected though household surveys, energy audits and other scientific and statistical sources.

Below is a summary of the usage profile for each energy source as reported by the residential sector.  To view the full study and analysis, download the Indianola Sustainability Study here.

electric

The top four residential electric processes are:
  • Heating
  • Electronics
  • Cooling

natural gas

The top residential natural gas process is heating.  Space heating is responsible for approximately 66% of total natural gas consumption.

Other uses include water heating, cooking and process uses for commercial customers.

transportation

The top residential transportation fuel usage is due to:
  • Work travel
  • Extracurricular activities
  • School Transport
  • Shopping
